Can I just rave about the immune system for a minute? Man, it is SO amazing!!
Every day, it works so incredibly hard to find foreign intruders in our bodies and protect us from illness. Our bodies do get sick every once in a while, but it’s a very important part of gaining immunity from different pathogens. One thing’s for sure… it’s definitely not fun being sick, or caring for a sick loved one.
So what can we do to prepare ourselves to fight sickness, especially as winter approaches? Thankfully, there are many ways that we can shorten the duration of an illness or help prevent it altogether! Today I’ll be sharing with you 6 simple things you can do, before you get sick, to naturally boost your immune system. Don’t forget to grab your free downloadable guide!
6 Simple Ways to Naturally Boost Your Immune System
This may seem like common knowledge, but many of us don’t truly understand the importance of giving our bodies the nutrition it needs to thrive. When we eat healthy, vitamin- and mineral-rich foods like fruits, veggies, lean proteins, and clean grains (watch out for GMOs), we are feeding every part of our bodies, down to the cellular level. Include LOTS of anti-inflammatory foods and antioxidant-rich foods, and don’t skip the healthy fats!
Quite often, this is the first thing to get neglected when our lives get busy – especially when you’re a mom! But exercise can actually make your body stronger, even if you are already starting to feel a little under the weather. Adding 30 minutes of medium-intensity exercise to your day, even in the form of a walk around your neighbourhood can really help protect your body from illness.
When we are tired, we can’t think clearly. So imagine what that does to our immune system! We don’t want it to be feeling sluggish at the time we need it most. Aim to get between 7-8 hours of sleep every day. For those of you saying “wouldn’t that be nice!” – I hear you. Perhaps you’re going through a challenging season that won’t last forever (aka, life with a baby or child that doesn’t sleep well), and just aim to get as much sleep as you can.
Stress + Other Emotions
Did you know? Negative emotions like stress, anger, frustration, and worry can really hinder our body’s ability to stay above the wellness line, and makes us much more vulnerable to illness. On the other hand, positive emotions such as joy and happiness do the opposite. People who are “always laughing”, for example, are more likely to live longer and have better overall health. How cool is that!
This should be a no brainer – but washing your hands and practising good hygiene is one of the easiest ways to keep yourself healthy! It really hit home when I did this hand washing experiment with my Grade 2 students. Wash your hands when you return home from an outing, and bring non-toxic hand sanitizer for those times you are out and about and can’t wash your hands, but feel like you need to.
Antioxidants + Vitamins
These days, it’s impossible to eat enough foods for adequate vitamin intake. That’s where supplements come in. Make sure you are taking vitamins that are clean and great quality. Some people don’t understand that the cheaper vitamins available at Walmart, for example, are full of synthetics and actually do the opposite as you expect them to. Find a liposomal Vitamin C (like this one) – this will actually allow your body to safely absorb more of the vitamin from a smaller dose.
Antioxidants are essentially the superheroes found in superfoods like berries and leafy greens, that can help lower your risk of chronic disease. Just like with vitamins, it’s impossible to ingest enough foods in a day to get the appropriate amount of antioxidants to keep us healthy. In order to make sure my family and I are getting enough antioxidants in our diet, we drink at least 2oz of this nutrient-dense antioxidant beverage daily. We all love it, especially my kids!
